Football is most exciting when a team is taking a shot at a goal. It doesn’t matter if the shot comes from a distance, up close, as a header, or during a penalty kick. All shots are not created equal but are exciting nonetheless. As far as data is concerned, there are also sub-categories of shots on target and off-target; however, for this article, we are looking at all shots on goal.

It would seem that most fans believe that if a team takes more shots on goal they will score more goals and win more games. But does the data show that to be true?

This data covers six Premier League seasons: 2017/2018 through 2022/2023.

During this period, there were 2,280 games. Let’s break down the results for wins only. This does not include draws. Wins are all that matters 🙂:

✔️
Home team win percentage when taking more shots than the away team: 31.45%
💡
Home team win percentage when they take less shots than the away team: 13.07%
✔️
Away team win percentage when taking more shots than home team: 30.44%
💡
Away team win percentage when they take less shots than the home team: 24.96%
✔️
Win percentage when the team takes more shots: 61.97%

This shows what most fans would have guessed: if you shoot more, you win more. But, at roughly 62%, it is not a guarantee. That is why one of our following articles will look at the teams who do this the best!
