It seems common sense that the team scoring the most goals will win the most games. However, in the Premier League, you earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. Therefore, goals alone aren’t tied directly to points awarded. For example, a team could score three goals, but so could their opponent, and only end up with a draw. Or they could score three points and still lose.

For the 2017/2018 season, Manchester City was the top-ranked team by goals scored and also won the championship that year. However, Liverpool was ranked second by goals but came in fourth in league position. Even more interesting, Man United were fifth in goals scored; however, they came in second in the league.

For the 2018/2019 season, Manchester City was the top-ranked team by goals scored and also won the championship that year. Interestingly, the rank of goals scored doesn’t match the league position. Arsenal scored the third most goals but came in fifth place. Chelsea came in third in the league but were fifth in goals scored.

For the 2019/2020 season, Liverpool was the top-ranked team and won the championship that year; however, they came in second in goals. Manchester City topped the league in goals but only came in second.

For the 2020/2021 season, Manchester City was the top-ranked team by goals scored and also won the championship that year. Interestingly, teams ranked by league position 2-9 had ranking by goals that didn’t fall in the same order of league position and goals.

For the 2021/2022 season, Manchester City was again the top-ranked team by goals scored and also won the championship that year. This was the rare season where goals nearly ranked consistently with league position.

For the 2022/2023 season, Manchester City was again the top-ranked team by goals scored and also won the championship that year. Amazingly, Man United came in third place in the league but was tied for eighth place regarding goals.

From the 2017/2018 to 2022/2023 seasons, the championship team did not score the most goals in only one year. However, the teams in the top five in league positions often don’t consistently rank in order by goals scored.
